John Hart is associate professor of mechanical engineering. Prior to joining the MIT faculty in July 2013, he was assistant professor of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and art/design, at the University of Michigan. He has PhD (‘06) and SM (‘02) degrees from MIT, and a BSE (‘00) degree from Michigan, all in mechanical engineering. At MIT, Hart leads the Mechanosynthesis Group, which aims to accelerate the science and technology of advanced manufacturing in areas including additive manufacturing, nanostructured materials, and the integration of computation and automation in process discovery. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in manufacturing processes, advanced materials, and research methods. Hart’s work has been recognized by prestigious awards from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has received two R&D 100 awards, several best paper awards, and the MIT Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching.
